A true must-see!

Besides all those exciting things and activities that await beyond the lavish retreat of the villa, there is one highly intriguing attraction you definitely should not miss… the ruined city of Akrotiri. Dubbed Santorini’s Pompeii for suffering a similar fate, namely been buried in a volcanic eruption, it does though offer a couple of differences…

First up, Akrotiri is an odd 4000 years older than Pompeii! This is also how it precedes Pompeii in having been destroyed some 1500 years before it…  And, secondly, unlike Pompeii, Akrotiri lacks any human or animal remains; probably because there might have been foreshocks, a handy warning of the impending doom, so people were able to prepare and abandon the island. Tonnes of layers of volcanic ash and rock shot up, following the fatal eruption that tore a gigantic hole in the middle of Santorini changing its shape for ever into a crescent-shaped caldera surrounding the remnants of the volcano; the settlement had been lost and kept buried for millennia until gradually unearthed by workers quarrying ash for the Suez Canal, then abandoned again for years until an official, state-run, excavation began in the 60s to reveal mud-and-brick built houses with hundreds of pots, drinking cups and large storage vessels with geometric pattern decorations, some still containing left-overs of olive oil or fish inside! It’s a stunning insight into the culture of the people that lived centuries ago, all thoroughly housed in a modern and airy building, with walkways that meander through the various findings, and organised in guided tours around the ancient city ruins.

A true must-see!
